America announces new sanctions against the military regime in Myanmar

The US State Department announced new sanctions on Friday against 22 individuals connected to the military regime in Myanmar, as well as against four entities that provide monetary or material support to the regime.

The announcement indicated that seven members of the regime, including 3 members of the State Administrative Council (CAC), the body established by the military after its coup on February 2, and 4 ministers of the cabinet, were included in a list of persons sanctioned in the US Treasury Department of Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC).

Furthermore, OFAC designated fifteen SAC members’ spouses or adult children.As a result, all property and interests of those in the US or controlled by US individuals are blocked. OFAC Director Andrea Gacki promised that, as a consequence of his violence against his people, the US “will continue to impose increased costs on the Burma army.”
