Brazil Launches Criminal Investigation Into President Over Indian Vaccine Deal
July 5, 2021
SÃO PAULO-The Supreme Court of Brazil has authorized prosecutors to investigate President Jair Bolsonaro on allegations that he ignored alleged irregularities in his government’s procurement process to purchase India’s Covaxin Covid-19 vaccine.
However, political scientists believe Mr. Bolsonaro still has enough support in Congress to prevent any legal proceedings against him from proceeding. Criminal charges brought against a president in Brazil can only be brought with the support of two-thirds of the lower house of Congress.
The investigation is focused on whether Mr. Bolsonaro ignored potential wrongdoing by senior members of the Health Ministry, who are accused of pushing ahead with a vaccine deal that others in the ministry had raised concerns about.
The investigation comes as the former army captain, who plans to run for re-election next year, is already under fire from public health experts for his handling of Covid-19, a virus that has killed over 500,000 Brazilians.
