Strengthening Military Ties between Pakistan and Russia

Pakistan and Russia agreed to boost bilateral military cooperation. The agreement was reached during the third round of meetings between Russia and Pakistan’s Joint Military Consultative Committee (JMCC). At the talks, Russian Deputy Defence Minister Col Gen Alexander V. Fomin and Defence Secretary retired Lt Gen Mian Mohammad Hilal Hussain led their respective sides. The JMCC was established in 2018 as the top bilateral defence cooperation forum. The 2014 defence cooperation agreement governs the military cooperation between Islamabad and Moscow. Since signing the cooperation agreement, the two countries’ defence ties have steadily grown.

The two sides discussed the current state of their bilateral relations at the JMCC meeting, including military training, joint exercises, intelligence cooperation, and defence industrial cooperation, according to a statement released by Pakistan’s defence ministry.

The two sides agreed to ensure effective follow-up and implementation of the decisions made during the meeting, as well as a continued strengthening of defence cooperation by the JMCC.

“During the negotiations, the sides praised the dynamically developing mutually beneficial relations in the military sphere and confirmed their intention to engage the aggregated potential in order to strengthen the military cooperation with maximum efficiency,” said Gen Fomin, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

Gen. Fomin praised the progress of Pakistan-Russia defence cooperation, saying that it was a key factor in regional security. “Development of constructive relations between Russia and Pakistan is a critical factor in maintaining regional stability,” he said.

Despite the world’s difficult epidemiological situation, he noted that Pakistan was one of the few countries with which Russia continued to hold previously scheduled events. At the meeting, the latest developments in Afghanistan were also discussed.The discussions on Afghanistan, according to Gen Fomin, wereprofound and constructive.

The fourth round of JMCC meetings will be held in Russia in 2022.Meanwhile, the opening ceremony of the two-week counter-terrorism exercise ‘Exercise Druzhba VI’ was held in the Molkino Trg area of Krasnodar, Russia. The drill includes Pakistani and Russian special forces, according to APP.Sergy Belopolsky, the mayor of Garyachi Kaluch, was the chief guest of the occasion. On the occasion, senior Pakistani and Russian officials were present.
